Surrendering your Pet

Unfortunately there may come a time when you can no longer care for your pet. Before surrendering your pet to our shelter, please take the time to explore all options. Whether this means taking your dog to a trainer, participating in financial aid programs for pets or entering your pet into a temporary foster program – our goal is to keep each animal with their loving owners whenever possible.

The Process

Schedule an Appointment

Scheduling an appointment will help us ensure a smooth transition process. We know that this can be a traumatic experience and our staff will be empathetic during this difficult time.

Fill out the Appropriate Surrendering Form 

The more information we have about your pet, the better care we can provide for them while they’re at the shelter. We’ll use that same information to find them a loving new home that will meet their needs.

Make the Surrendering Donation

Since we will be taking over the care of your surrendered pet, we ask for a small donation to the shelter. The surrender fee goes toward necessary vaccines, food, medical needs and staff time. On average, it costs us $20 per day to board an animal!

Eau Claire County Residents

Adult animal (unaltered) – $75

Adult animal (altered) – $50

Young animal (under 6 mo) – $75

Out-of-County Residents

Adult animal (unaltered) – $100

Adult animal (altered) – $100

Young animal (under 6 mo) – $100

The fees listed above are a starting point for cats and dogs. Fees can increase depending on vaccination status, if your pet is spayed or neutered, and by location. Please call us for a more accurate quote.

With written proof of up-to-date rabies, bordetella, and distemper vaccinations, and alter if applicable. Add $5 per vaccine if not up-to-date.

Can I bring an animal to surrender at any time?
We book surrenders in advance to ensure we have the kennel space.
Why do animals get surrendered to the shelter?
The number one reason people surrender their animals is due to moving or major life changes.
Why is it taking so long to surrender my animal?
The shelter is experiencing a very high volume of surrenders and strays. We try our very best to accommodate for as quick as our schedule allows – but we must adopt animals out to move more in!
Is my animal going to be safe with you?
ECCHA is committed to providing a safe haven for all animals that come through our doors. They will receive the absolute best care possible given by our staff. While we know the decision to surrender was very difficult, know that they are in loving hands with us.
